Aranmula Gets New Airport

The Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Shri K.C. Venugopal informed Rajya Sabha today that the Government has granted "in-principle" approval for setting up of new airport at Aranmula, Kerala in September, 2012.

As per Greenfield Airport Policy, 2008, Airport Authority of India (AAI), State Government or any other entity can submit application for setting up of a Greenfield airport in the prescribed proforma for consideration of Steering Committee headed by Secretary, Civil Aviation.

The proposals are examined in consultation with AAI, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Defence and concerned State Governments.

There is no prescribed minimum aerial distance between airports in the country.

However, in case a Greenfield airport is proposed to be set up within 150 Km of an existing civilian airport, the impact on the existing airport is examined and such cases are decided by the Government on a case to case basis.

The aerial distance of the proposed airport at Aranmula from the existing airports at Thiruvanantapuram and Cochin is approximately 130 Kms.
